Producer Spotlight: The North Starz

In astronomy, the "North Star" shines brightest among others in a constellation. Fittingly, "The North Starz" are three young, dynamic producers out of Detroit, MI looking to shine the brightest in a night sky filled with would be Pharrells and Dr. Dres. Recently, The North Starz (XI, Sky, and Yung Classix) took home the crown for the ATL Beat Battle Three Year Anniversary and gave a superb showing at the A3C Hip Hop Festival's Producer Showcase in Atlanta. I caught up with them a few days later to pick their brains.

Talent vs. Technology

Too often I hear people brag about the equipment they use while downplaying other artists or producers because they don't have the top of the line gear. I hear studio owners and engineers talking about their new $8,000 microphones, or the number of tracks they can simultaneously record. I hear producers tout their MPCs, keyboards, software and sounds. But what is the benefit of having all the best equipment money can buy if you still produce WACK records?
