Nas to Receive BMI Icon Award at 2026 R&B/Hip-Hop Awards
Hip-hop legend Nas is adding another major honor to a career that has helped shape the sound and storytelling of the genre for more than three decades.
The GRAMMY Award-winning rapper will receive the BMI Icon Award at the 2026 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards on Wednesday, August 26, in Los Angeles. BMI is recognizing Nas for his prolific songwriting and lasting influence on hip-hop and culture.
From Illmatic to Icon
Born Nasir Jones and raised in Queensbridge, New York, Nas changed the trajectory of hip-hop with the release of his landmark 1994 debut, Illmatic. The album's vivid storytelling and lyricism established him as one of rap's premier writers and would ultimately earn a place in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2021.
More than 30 years later, his résumé includes 17 studio albums, more than 35 million records sold worldwide and 17 GRAMMY nominations. After years of nominations, Nas earned his first GRAMMY in 2021 when King's Disease won Best Rap Album.
His influence has also expanded far beyond the recording booth.
From the Booth to the Boardroom
Through QueensBridge Venture Partners, Nas has been involved in early investments in companies including Coinbase, Lyft, Dropbox, Ring, Robinhood and Pluto TV. He is also a co-owner of Mass Appeal, the media and entertainment company whose work spans music, film, television, publishing and live experiences.
That evolution—from an emcee documenting life in Queensbridge to an artist, entrepreneur and investor with influence across multiple industries—is part of what makes the BMI recognition significant.
BMI Vice President of Creative, Atlanta, Catherine Brewton said Nas has elevated hip-hop through his storytelling, lyricism and commitment to innovation, describing his legacy as one that continues to influence artists and shape the genre.
Joining a Legendary List of BMI Icons
The BMI Icon Award places Nas among an impressive list of previous recipients that includes James Brown, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Janet Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Nile Rodgers, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne and Babyface, among others.
The invitation-only BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards will also recognize the songwriters, producers and publishers behind the past year's 35 most-performed R&B/Hip-Hop songs in BMI's repertoire. Awards for Songwriter, Song, Producer and Publisher of the Year will also be presented.
The Bigger Lesson for Independent Artists
For a generation of independent artists building careers today, Nas' journey is also a reminder that longevity in music can extend well beyond records and streams. Ownership, songwriting, business ventures and strategic investments can all become part of the legacy.
More than three decades after Illmatic, Nas isn't simply being celebrated for what he contributed to hip-hop's past. He's being honored for an influence that is still being felt today.
